France Life

What A {French} Year

I have been living in France for nearly a year. Where has that time gone!? I came here confused and just wanting to prolong my backpacking trip by trying a new culture and a tricky language but didn’t expect to still be here 12 months later. I got a TEFL teaching job with children and adults, my own apartment and even a lovely French man. Its crazy how things work out when you least expect them to.

I have always been a big believer in staying positive and even when you don’t know what is going to happen in the future just say yes to things, relax and everything will always works itself out. My contract finishes here in the summer so then I will be off backpacking again. This time in South America and this time in a relationship. I thought I had solo female travel pretty sussed but it looks like I will have a whole load of new things to learn and also share with you!

It hasn’t all been a bed of roses and struggling with the language, getting frustrated when the simplest of tasks take so long as you cant find the right words, not knowing the etiquette in social situations and missing loved ones and certain English food (Branston pickle, Cadburys chocolate and Mr Kipling French Fancies) are all negatives. But when the French words do come (I keep surprising myself with the knowledge my little sponge brain has picked up), when I see my students confidence growing as they chat away in English and when I try new food that blows my mind I soon forget about Heinz beans or Robinson’s squash.

If you get the opportunity to live in another country for a little while I would say go for it. You will be overwhelmed, maybe a little homesick and out of your comfort zone but as soon as all that passes you will learn so much about yourself, others and the country. I am definitely a different girl to the unsure confused backpacker that arrived here, it now feels like home.

I wanted to share with you a few of my fave things that have happened since living here (You can read more about each one by doing a search on the blog!):

I am very lucky that I have my French family as well as new friends over here, I am feeling really positive about the next few and last months of my French adventure as well as getting my head down to do some serious novel writing and continued blogging of course! As my friends would say ‘Est pas belle la vie?’ ‘Isn’t life beautiful’.

  • I did live abroad, I’m an Aussie and I gave birth to my daughter in Scotland 22 years ago. She has a British passport and I have been encouraging her to use it. I take it you’re British? Is it difficult working in Europe on a British passport? I read a lot of blogs ( mainly americans) and they have an awful lot of red tape gaining permission to live and work on the continent..

    • Ooh she should defo get some use out of it! I’m British and not had any problems with finding work using my passport. I think you are right it is slightly trickier for Americans to find work over here but it’s not impossible. Thanks for your comment!

  • I’m originally from France, and it makes me so happy to see you enjoyed living here so much 🙂 Although I do miss some UK food (Cadbury’s!! haha), we do have awesome food in France 🙂 And the Parc Astérix is so much fun!!

    • Oh I know how fantastic French food is! I have been enjoying indulging in as much food and wine that I can not that my waistline will thank me! High five for Parc Asterix that place is understated but a great day out.

I’m so happy you have had such a fantastic experience since I met you on a beach in Goa last year. How time flies and what a different life you are leading. You have created a brilliant blog site, been featured in magazine, now have a mentor, are teaching English to French students and eating you’re body weight in croissants! I am most proud of you, it gives me pleasure to read you’re blog and experiences. Keep living the dream! x

    • I just want to squish you! Thanks so much it’s been a blast having you along on this crazy journey with me. Time really does fly when you are having fun but I’m positive there are even more good times to come for both of us xxx

  • ‘joyeux anniversaire’ my little soldier. To think how lost we all were a year ago on that beach in Goa, crying our eyes out on many occasions, and piecing each other slowly back together.
Very proud of you for making it to a year in one piece. It’s surely true that everything happens for a reason and you are so strong and successful because of it. You are our inspiration. Lots of love and hugs x

    • You are possibly one of my favourite people on this planet! Thanks so much for you lovely words and you are right we are both stronger and on a better path because of everything. Xx
