The Most Underrated French Region?

Last week I got to head back to the place I called home for 2 years and it just reminded me why I love this part of the world SO much. Normandy is often over-looked but, in my opinion, it deserves to be a must-visit French region.

Famous for its important history - thanks to William the Conqueror and D-Day landings - Normandy may not have the sunshine of St Tropez or the class of Cannes but it does offer more than you may think … French cheese, wine, cakes… Need I say more? Well, okay, here are just some other reasons that I think Normandy should be added to your travel wish-list:

1. The coastline is just breathtaking. Jagged white cliffs, mossy hillsides and lush green fields aplenty mean a trip to the beach is unlike your traditional seaside visit. Grey, shiny pebbles line many of the beaches along the coast where you can find stylish resorts and quaint fishing villages. If you follow me on Snapchat (TheNotwedordead) you will have seen me climbing the cliffs of Etretat, followed by a well-deserved salted caramel ice-cream, this time last week!

2. There are museums aplenty. Culture vultures should check out the Bayeux tapestry in the historical medieval town of Bayeux and art lovers must visit Giverny, the picturesque village that inspired Monet to pick up his paintbrush.

3. Amazing French cider is made here from the many orchards that pepper the countryside. Head to local farmers markets to sample the best (and most potent) stuff. If you want something stronger, then a trip to Calvados will allow you to stock up on the famous digestif drink.

4. You can also drink a little known liquor made by monks. Yup. Head to Fecamp and check out the sumptuous Benedictine Palace to sample it (make sure to have a benedictine coffee or cocktail in the indoors garden cafe whilst you’re there!).

5. If boozing isn’t your thing then hit the shops in Le Havre and once the plastic has taken a battering then check out why this place was granted World Heritage status by UNESCO.

6. Mont St Michel has to be seen to be believed, which is something over 3million people experience every year! Cross the causeway to reach this tidal island that houses an abbey and spectacular views.

7. Soak up the stunning architecture of crooked houses, an imposing cathedral, lovely boutique shops and retrace Joan of Arcs steps in Rouen. I adore this city (and so does my dad!).

8. The prettiest town in France is here (according to moi) although avoid the school holidays if you want to miss the many tourists who visit Honfleur. Sit along the oh-so-adorable harbour to people watch and stuff yourself with fresh moules frites. Speaking of fish, you can taste the freshest kippers, mussels and fruit de mer in the fishing town of Fecamp.

Have you ever visited Normandy? If so, I’d love to know the best loved places that you’d advice others to check out!

  • I had 2 great uncles who saw this area of France in a whole different light. However, one always said he wanted to go back, the other is still there. When my dad and I go back to Europe next year, this is one of our stops. He wants to visit his uncle, and I want to try and retrace their steps from so many years ago.

    • Wow that sound like it will be such a nice trip. I think visiting places when you have a family connection make them seem even more incredible!

The thing that would appeal to me most, would be exploring the coastline area. Fecamp sounds like an area that I would be drawn to. Seeing the harbor area, and the numerous churches there, would be enough to keep me occupied for a while. Besides that, I am crazy about mussels, and the picture of them on your post has my mouth watering.

    • Ah yes - the classic moules frites are a staple when I visit France. There is just something so charming about this part of the world so if you ever get the chance to visit then please do!
