My Adventure Travel

Two mums for the price of one

One of the biggest annoyances (especially for a blogger) is the unpredictability of wifi connections which seems to be very hit and miss in India compared to Thailand. When you are feeling low all you want is to have a chat with your mum or best mate to help make everything seem better but when faced with intermittent stuttering conversations and difference in time zones it is the most stressful thing in the world! However, sometimes what you think you need comes to you in the most unexpected of ways.

Whilst thinking about where to go next and cheer my sorry ass up I bump into these two ladies who are staying at my guesthouse. They see that I am stressed with my brain full of indecision and ‘the fear’ setting in so take me under their wing. Annie and Geraldine are both in their early sixties, have been best friends since they were 18 and after their husbands passed away they decided to go travel the world. I wanted to get cheered up from my mum (in that way only mums can) and here I was faced with two new adoptive mums -Thanks universe!

We spent the day at a small secluded beach that required you to stumble over rocks and boulders to get to. We were the only people on this beach but the waves are so rough compared to the sea in Thailand that just going for a cool down dip turned into a mental and physical assault course to not end up swallowing salty water, keep your bikini on with your modesty still intact and not get bashed about on dangerous rocks. Getting out of the sea was most definitely not a Bond girl moment more of a spluttering, drowned rat with a huge wedgie.

It was their friends fiftieth birthday so that night they were going for a meal to celebrate with them. I was fine staying in by myself but they wouldn’t take no for an answer and I’m so glad they didn’t. The restaurant was like from a dreamlike film, with colourful twinkling lights hanging from the trees, huge domed white wicker pods with extravagant tables and throne chairs and a guy playing the sitar as incense wafted over you. I never expected to gatecrash a fiftieth birthday bash and have such a great night!

I have heard from one of the Irish girls I met in Thailand who is staying in south goa and asked me to come down. After having a good chat with my two new mums I decide to get myself out of north goa and book my taxi for the next day. I know this is exactly the advice my own mum would give me so I feel so much more clear headed and excited about being here.
