Australia Oceania Travel

NotWedOrDead Goes Down Under

G’day mate, throw another shrimp on the barbie and all that jazz because I’m heading to the land of kangeroos, koalas and, erm, Karl Kennedy!

In a few weeks I will be making my way on a stupidly long flight to Sydney to spend three weeks discovering what the east coast has to offer -and I need YOU!

With time being so tight and there being so much to see and do I would love to hear from you what I need to priortise on my trip to the wonderful world of Oz.

Have you travelled to Australia before? Are you Australian? If so, I’d love to know where I simply have to go, what I must eat and what tips you can share with me and the readers of this blog.

Sharing’s caring and all that!

You can comment below, tweet me, send me a message on Facebook or drop me an email ([email protected]). I will obviously be sharing my Australian journey on the blog and taking you along with me (sadly, only virtually) so your insider knowledge will help others too!

The other exciting news is that my book Destination Thailand, has been spotted on the shelves of KMart supermarket in Sydney so I’m hoping to have some book fun whilst I’m there too. I just need to work on not offending any locals with calling them Sheila or Bruce, especially if I’ve never met them before.

Hello, I am not Australian but I lived in Australia (East coast) for 6 months and I tried to get the best from it. I wouldn’t absolutely miss Sydney and Melbourne, but consider going up north (snorkelling in the great barrier reef is one of my best memories…). I know you like beaches: maybe a trip to the whitsunday islands? Noosa? North Stradbroke Island? Byron Bay is definitely a really nice beach town -unspoilt and traditional- I wouldn’t miss the opportunity to visit (if you do go up the lighthouse, there is an amazing view from there). One place where I haven’t been - but it’s definitely on my must visit list when I go back - is Fraser Island. If you like a bit of adventure that’s the place for you. Maybe you want to go to see the famous ayers rock and visit the outback? For the activities I recommend whale and dolphin watching (I don’t remember which is the best season to see them but you can try), snorkelling and eat a lot of Tim Tams, lamingtons and Anzac biscuits. Always keep in mind that Australia is HUGE and you probably need to fly everywhere you wanna go, but there are really cheap companies (check JetStar). Follow your instinct and enjoy your time (I’m so jealous!)

True Australia is huge but as Costanza said you can fly everywhere or go all out and hire a camper. Then you really will see the country. The east coast certainly has its joys and while it is true the far north is great carry on and go to the Northern Territory then you really are having an adventure. The sights are easily accessed from Darwn and the Kakadu along with the Katherine Gorge and Litchfield are all amazing. Our favourite place up there was Edith Falls mainly for the stunning scenery and fantastic swimming hole.
Carrying straight along to Western Australia and you will find incredible scenery and it’s well worth a trip right around the whole coast. Highlights for us included the Ningaloo Reef for its crystal waters and out there scenery. Then Perth is a great big city with all the trimmings you would expect along with wonderful food and wine to die for. Fantastic wineries to visit as well. The thing and a simple thing for me was the incredible blue water all along the coast and some pretty good surf spots if you are a brave girl…sharks abound.
The city no one seems to rate highly is Adelaide and the joke on us was as we we drove in through the bottom end of the city we decided a couple of days maybe. So six weeks later we left very reluctantly having had the best time ever. The thing is we are not young and I cannot imagine how good it would have been if we were your age. I would say go have a look it’s worth it.
The next place that grabbed me was the Great Ocean Road and its surroundings, just so good and handy to Melbourne as well.
Well I hope you have an incredible time in Australia and hopefully you may get to New Zealand as well then the scenery will knock off your socks.
