Get The London Look – Camden Market

My memory isn’t great, there have been so many times when people will mention something that happened in the past, a funny moment or story and I just blankly stare at them having no idea what they’re chatting about. But then I have times when a memory is so vivid in my mind that it’s like it had just happened, and usually those are the most random, weirdest memories that stick around.

For example, I last visited Camden Market about 8 years ago and all I could remember was how eclectic the people were, how bright and loud the shop fronts were and how there was a man selling doughnuts made up of every flavour imaginable. So, when my friend Rach suggested we spend a lazy Saturday morning exploring Camden, of course I said yes - I was desperate to make a return visit to the doughnut man.

If you’ve never visited this crazy colourful side of London then you’re in for a treat. The busy streets are full of tourists, skater boys, punks, families and big groups of friends clogging up the pavements soaking in the fun atmosphere. Around 100,000 people indulge in retail therapy hunting out bargains and unique finds from hundreds of independent retailers every weekend. Yup, these streets get pretty chocka.

Be prepared to wave bye bye to your morning as once you enter the old brick arches of the locks it’s like falling down a rabbit hole. Over the years the previously separate markets seem to have merged into one big colorful mess that makes the perfect people watching spot.

The indoor market is full of arched warrens, mazes of niche stalls and crammed full vintage shops selling everything and anything you could possibly. Losing your bearings here is part of the fun. But even if you do tumble down a rabbit hole fear not, as wherever you are in Camden market food is never far away. The markets are full of small artisanal stalls selling Thai noodles, English fish and chips, Indian samosas, Greek tapas… the list is endless, it’s like the whole world is just a tasty mouthful away.

We spent a few lazy hours, aimlessly wandering around inside before having to re-emerge into the bright crisp sunlight to make our way to Tottenham Court Road so I could pick up my new laptop (a whole other story but basically kittens, computers and cups of tea are not a good mix). On our way out it was then that I spotted the man of my dreams … Doughnut man was still here! Whoop Whoop!

Of course I couldn’t leave without buying a gooeey cake the size of my face. Man, it was SO good.

Have you ever been to Camden? If you’re planning on making a visit then please say hi to the doughnut man for me and treat yourself to one. Go on, you deserve it.
