My Australian adventure blog posts are all a little out of sync but I hope you’ll forgive me as I feel my feet haven’t touched the ground since I landed what with my book Destination India coming out, promo work and reviews coming in as well as my brother’s wedding – phew. But I am over the worst of the jet lag, have unpacked my bag and am getting stuck into ‘real life’ once more. Plus, I had to share this with you…
When I visited Sydney I unintentionally timed my trip with the launch of the Vivid Sydney celebrations; the world’s largest festival of light, art and ideas. Boy, am I glad that I did!
I instantly fell in love with this city and maybe this party atmosphere had something to do with that. Over 1.7million people are expected to visit the festival to see the breath-taking structures, listen to inspiring talks or dance along to the many music concerts that are taking place.
I got to hang out at the stunning Quay restaurant with views over the iconic Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House as these two world-famous sites were lit up on the opening night. The theme this year is ‘Song lines’ that celebrates Australian Indigenous culture with bright bursts of colour, giant animated creatures crawling over the Opera House sails and clever patterns that change by the second.
Over 90 light installations are dotted around the city (including at Taronga Zoo and the Royal Botanic Gardens) and it can become a bit of a treasure hunt making your way through the different precincts to see them all. I particularly loved the cathedral of light – a delicate tunnel of intricate fairy lights set in the stunning grounds of the Botanic Gardens, with views of the Opera House no less, that come to life as the sun sets. There is also a love-o-meter, a giant heart shaped structure that glows brighter the louder people say ‘I love you’ into the microphone, although being in this city on my own I didn’t fancy waiting in line with amorous couples to experience this one!
The event runs until the 18th June so if you do have chance to head to this stunning city then stop thinking and start organising your trip! If not, there’s always next year…
