I am really happy here in koh Tao. The island is tiny and everyone is so chilled out it is just what I needed from the craziness of Bangkok. It is also really nice to just wake up in the morning and think ‘what do I want to do today’. To stop myself getting overwhelmed that I could do anything but also that I’m not on a two week package holiday so need to cram everything in I take it small step by small step.
So the days start with breakfast on the beach, usually fresh watermelon and pineapple, then a walk up and down the beach to sit with a good book. As I don’t have a watch I am starting to just eat when I feel hungry. Which is quite liberating but also quite strange when I feel my tummy rumbling and work out it has been hours since I last ate. Very different to constantly snacking at my office desk!
Before I came out on this trip I was worried that I would be alone for a lot of the time. I tried to get my head ready for that but actually I have been in the company of some fantastic people where you meet one person who introduces you to the next and so on. The Canadian guys were off scuba diving ( which koh Tao is famous for) but they had introduced me to a cool guy from Bradford called dan who I spent the day with on the beach and putting the world to rights over a couple of burgers.
That evening dan was leaving to go travel north, and I wanted to give my liver a break from drinking so I decided to go watch a film. By myself. This may not seem that big a deal but back home I wouldn’t dare to do this as just don’t think I have the confidence to pull it off. It was being shown in a bar not a cinema so it wasn’t dark and meant I could see all the couples around me. I didn’t let this put me off, I ordered food and settled down to watch the film. It was called ‘love and other drugs’ which was a lot more soppy and romantic that I would have liked but it still felt good to have done something out of my comfort zone.
